About Protect PDF

What is the Protect PDF Tool?

Protect PDF adds an open password to a PDF so only someone with the password can view the file. It is useful for drafts, contracts, invoices, tax files, HR documents, and any PDF that should not be casually opened after sharing.

How to password protect a PDF

  1. Drop one or more PDF files into the tool.
  2. Enter a password and confirm it.
  3. Click Protect, then download the protected PDF or ZIP.

When to use it

  • Client files: Add a password before sending reports or invoices.
  • Internal documents: Reduce accidental access to drafts and team paperwork.
  • Personal records: Add a basic open password before storing sensitive PDFs.

Privacy

Your PDF is processed locally in your browser. The file is not uploaded to a server, which keeps the workflow fast and private.

Good to know

  • If a PDF is already password-protected, you may need to remove its password before protecting it again.
  • Password protection helps control access, but it is not a replacement for secure file sharing or a proper document management process.
  • Use a strong password and share it through a different channel than the PDF.

FAQ

Does this upload my PDF?

No. The PDF is processed locally in your browser.

What kind of password should I use?

Use a unique password with at least 12 characters. Longer passphrases are easier to remember and harder to guess.

Can I protect multiple PDFs at once?

Yes. Add multiple PDFs and download the protected files as a ZIP.

Can I remove a PDF password too?

This tool adds password protection. If a PDF is already locked, unlock it first with the original password.

Is this the same as a digital signature?

No. Password protection controls opening the file. It does not prove who signed or approved the document.
