China Metro Group conducting technical studies on the light rail transit system in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap province has reported a positive move in the studies, citing its commitment to make the projects successful.

The commitment was made during a meeting on Wednesday by Li Kuo, Director-General of the China Metro Group to Peng Ponea, Minister of Public Works and Transport in Phnom Penh.

During the meeting Li briefed about the positive progress of the studies on two light rail transit development projects, citing that the two light rail transition lines would directly connect the airports to their respective city centres.

First, the light rail transit project connecting Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport to Siem Reap and second Light train transit project connecting Techo Takhmao International Airport to Phnom Penh capital.

The 4F-class Techo Takhmao International Airport, is an international airport, currently under construction in Kandal province of Cambodia, located about 30 kilometres south of Phnom Penh,
The Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport, which is built on a 700-hectare plot in Soutr Nikom district, is located about 50 kilometres from Siem Reap City and 40 kilometres from the Angkor Wat temple inside Angkor Park. The airport is set to start operating by mid-October.

“China Metro Group Demonstrates Good Will and Commitment to Promote Light Rail Transit System in Cambodia,” the ministry said.

Ponea lauded the positive move of China Metro Group on the light rail transit systems in Cambodia.

“Both projects will contribute to reducing traffic congestion and provide additional travel options for Cambodians as well as tourists,” Ponea added.

The move comes amid the government luring investors to mega infrastructure, building roads, bridges, ports, railways, expressways, airports, ports and logistics centres.

According to the Comprehensive Master Plan on Cambodia’s Transit and Logistics System 2023-2033, the government is seeking funding sources of approximately $40 billion for the development of 174 prioritized infrastructure projects.

On Monday, Prime Minister Hun Manet urged Chinese investors to explore investment opportunities in infrastructure in Cambodia, as the country prioritizes building physical infrastructure in its socio-economic development.

“I would like to invite Chinese investors to place firm trust in the Cambodian government and continue to invest in mega transportation infrastructure in Cambodia,” the Prime Minister added.
