MARTIN, Tenn. – Despite outshooting its opponent 31-10 on the evening, the University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team could not find the winning touch, opening Ohio Valley Conference play with a 0-0 draw against Eastern Illinois on Friday night.
The Skyhawks (2-3-4, 0-0-1 OVC) tallied 31 shots on the night, including outshooting the visiting Panthers 14-1 in the first half while controlling 54 percent of the game's total possession. Despite the narrow lead in possession for UT Martin, the time can be skewed as Eastern Illinois played a reserved style of play, keeping 86 percent of the team's control on the defensive half.
Highlighting the night was the matchup between the two teams' goalkeepers. For the Skyhawks, junior
Erica Myers snagged three saves on the evening while recording her 10
th career shutout. With the performance, Myers moves into a tie for second on the program leaderboard with former standouts Lauren MacKenzie and Johanna Rathbun. On the other side, Eastern Illinois goalkeeper Sara Teteak was impressive tallying 16 saves on the evening, including a handful of diving attempts which preserved her first shutout of the season and 16th of her career.
Offensively, junior
Alice Adams led the Skyhawks with six total shots, including three on goal. A total of 10 different players registered shot attempts for UT Martin while the group of Adams,
Nicole Collins,
Hendrikje Baurmann,
Isabel Almarsdottir and
Blare Gerido each tallied multiple shots on goal.
UT Martin will look to close out the weekend on the right note on Sunday, Sept. 22 when playing host to OVC foe Belmont. The match is scheduled to get underway at 2 p.m. and will broadcast on ESPN+.
