DRIVER'S ROAD TEST EXAMINATION

If the road test is successfully completed, the person who gave it shall complete a certificate of the driver’s road test. The original or copy of the certificate shall be retained in the employing motor carrier’s driver qualification file of the person examined and a copy given to the person who was examined. (49 CFR 391.31(e)(f)(g))

  • 360‐degree walk‐around performed  
  • Looks for leakage of coolants, fuel, lubricants, checks under hood - oil, water. The general condition of the engine compartment steering 
  • All lighting devices and reflectors, condition of tires, Horn and windshield wipers
  • Rearview mirror adjustment, emergency equipment 
  • Proper operation of parking and brakes 
  • Check dashboard warning lights for proper functioning, cleans windshield, windows, mirrors, lights, and reflectors, review and signs previous DVIR.
  • General vehicle condition noted
Successfully Completed the Pre-Trip inspection. (As required by Sec. 392.7) *

Part 2: COUPLING AND UNCOUPLING

Part 2:  COUPLING AND UNCOUPLING

  • Lines up units
  • Connects glad hand to trailer to apply trailer brakes before coupling
  • Connects glad hands and light line properly
  • Couples without difficulty
  • Raises landing gear fully after coupling
  • Visually checks king pin assembly to be specific or proper coupling
  • Assure that the surface will support the trailer before uncoupling
Successfully Completed Coupling and uncoupling of combination units, if the equipment he or she may drive includes combination units. *

Part 3: Placing the Vehicle in Motion and use of controls in Operation

  • Uses seat belt
  • Starts vehicle properly
  • Allows proper warm-up
  • Maintains proper engine speed (rpm) while driving 
  • Does not abuse motor 

Clutch and Transmission 

  • Starts loaded unit smoothly and uses clutch properly 
  • Times gearshifts properly
  • Shifts gears smoothly, uses proper gear sequence

Brakes

  • Knows proper use of tractor protection valve
  • Understands low air warning
  • Tests service brakes
  • Builds full air pressure before moving

Steering

  • Drives with both hands on the wheel 
  • Controls steering wheel 
  • Steers smoothly

Lights

  • Knows lighting regulations
  • Uses proper headlight beam
  • Dim lights when meeting or following other traffic
  • Adjusts speed to a range of headlights
  • Proper use of auxiliary lights

  • Parks proper distance from curb
  • Does not hit nearby vehicles or stationary objects
  • Parks a proper distance from the curb
  • Sets parking brake, puts in gear, chocks wheels. shuts off motor
  •  Checks traffic conditions and signals when pulling out from parked position

Parking (Road)

  • Parks off pavement
  • Avoids parking on soft shoulder
  • Uses emergency warning signals when required
  • Secures unit properly

PART 6 • OPERATING IN TRAFFIC PASSING AND TURNING

A. TURNING

  • Signals intention to turn well in advance
  • Gets into the proper lane well in advance of turn
  • Checks traffic conditions and turns only when the intersection is clear 
  • Restricts traffic from passing on right when turning right 
  • Completes turn promptly and safely, does not impede other traffic

B. TRAFFIC SIGNS AND SIGNALS

  • Approaches signal prepared to stop if necessary 
  • Obeys traffic signal 
  • Uses good judgment on yellow light
  • Starts smoothly on a green light
  •  Notices and heeds traffic signs, obeys "Stop" signs  

C. INTERSECTIONS

  • Adjusts speed to permit stopping if necessary 
  • Checks for cross traffic regardless of traffic controls
  • Yields right-of-way safely

D. GRADE CROSSINGS

  • Adjusts speed to conditions
  • Makes safe stop, if required
  • Selects proper gear and does not shift gears while crossing
  • Knows and understands federal and state rules governing grade crossing

E. PASSING

  • Passes with sufficient clear space ahead
  • Does not pass in an unsafe location: hill. curve, intersection
  • Signals change of lanes
  • Warns driver being passed
  • Pulls out and back with certainty
  • Does not tailgate
  • Does not block traffic with slow pass
  • Allows enough room when returning to the right lane

F. SPEED

  • Speed consistent with basic ability
  • Adjusts speed properly to the road, weather, traffic conditions, legal limits
  • Slows down for rough roads
  • Slows down In advance of curves. intersections, etc.
  • Maintains consistent speed

G. COURTESY AND SAFETY

  • Uses defensive driving techniques
  • Yields right-of-way safely
  • Goes ahead when given rlght•of-way by others
  • Does not crowd other drivers or force way through traffic
  • Allows faster traffic to pass 
  • Keeps right and In their own lane 
  • Uses horn only when necessary 
  • Generally courteous and uses proper conduct
