Wildcats Battle for Gritty Win at Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. – Northwestern earned its first Big Ten win of the season on the road with a 1-0 shutout at Nebraska on Thursday night. 

Northwestern improved to 3-5-2 on the season and 1-1 in Big Ten play. The 'Cats have still yet to return home for a conference matchup and have one game left on their three game road swing. 

Junior Madi Kennel fired the Wildcats ahead with a crucial goal in the 72nd minute. The assist came on a cross from first-year Danika Austin.
 
The Wildcats posted their second shutout on the season. Sophomore goalkeeper Mackenzie Wood recorded her 10th career shutout with one save while facing 12 shots.

Chicago's Big Ten Team continues its road trip on Sunday at Iowa to face the Hawkeyes, who are receiving the most votes out of the United Soccer Coaches' Top 25.

Match Notes
  • Kennel now has three points on the season, and the goal was third of her career, and the first goal since the third game of her career when she scored a brace at Illinois State in 2017. Kennel now has seven points in her career.
  • Austin used her strength to make a great play on the assist, notching the third of her rookie campaign as a defender. 
  • Wood's tenth career shutout moved her into a tie for fifth place all-time at Northwestern with Erin Ekeberg (1997-00)
  • First year Reilly Riggs made her first career start and contributed to the shutout. 
  • First year Marianna Annest also made a crucial stop in the game with a goal line clearance to keep the game tied at 0-0.
  • Northwestern has now won two straight against Nebraska and picked up its second road win of the season.
