EXCLUSIVE: Biden says Trump has done 'everything to embrace white supremacy'
Joe Biden, Democratic presidential candidate, sat down with KCCI exclusively to give his opinion on President Donald Trump's stance on gun violence.
"[Trump] has done everything to in fact embrace white supremacy, giving them reason to think they're acceptable," Biden said. "Whether he is a white supremacist or not, he has encouraged white supremacy and I find no distinction between the encouragement of them and whether he is one. What he's doing is wrong."
Biden's comments come after Democratic presidential candidate, Elizabeth Warren called Trump a white supremacist.
Today, Mitch McConnell, Senate majority leader, said he is calling Congress to expand federal background checks for gun owners.
"I would too, but don't see courage on Mitch's part to do that," Biden said. "Some Republicans are coming around and not afraid of the NRA, but I don't think Mitch will be the one to do the right thing on this one."
When asked if the president should sign an executive order on background checks for guns, Biden said Trump should.
"He said he thought it was a good idea and now he's been threatened by the NRA," Biden said. "Mr. President step up, you said you're worried some of your GOP friends are afraid of the NRA. Prove you're not friends with the NRA. I want to work with you. Prove it. End it. Do the background checks. Universal. We need more than that, but I'll be happy with doing that right now."
Biden also spoke about how the country can get through a difficult time of grief based on his own struggles after losing his wife and daughter in a car accident and then his son, Beau. KCCI will have that on the Close Up show Sunday morning.
