Theologian and author Russell Moore said Thursday he is feeling better after battling a case of “breakthrough” COVID-19 that also impacted his family.
Moore, a public theologian at Christianity Today and minister in residence at Immanuel Nashville Church, had said a day earlier he felt as if he had been “run over by a bulldozer” after catching COVID, although, he added, his wife “felt ok” and his “older vaccinated boys were fine all along.”
Moore is vaccinated.

Moore encouraged others to get vaccinated.
“The numbers are showing us: the rates of vaccinated people hospitalized is tiny,” Moore tweeted. “Deaths even more so. I am glad to be vaccinated, but plead with y’all to do so too.”

Breakthrough cases of the COVID Delta variant in the vaccinated are not rare, although on average, they are significantly less severe and less likely to lead to a person’s death.
In Tennessee, for example, 88 percent of COVID hospitalizations and 94 percent of COVID deaths from May through July were among the unvaccinated, according to the Tennessee Department of Health.
In Mississippi, 90 percent of COVID hospitalizations and 86 percent of COVID deaths from July 28 to Aug. 24 were among the unvaccinated, according to the Mississippi Department of Health. An unvaccinated individual in his 40s is 14 times more likely to die from COVID than is a vaccinated person, the department said; an unvaccinated person aged 50-64 is 27 times more likely to die.
Similar data is found out West, too.
The Oregon Health Authority (the state’s department of health) reported that the rate of COVID-19 cases among unvaccinated individuals in the state is six times the rate of COVID-19 cases among fully vaccinated individuals. Between Aug. 15 and Aug. 21, 88 percent of the COVID cases in the state were among the unvaccinated.
