Neat but cheap plastic- still recommended
I dusted off a Dell T20 that I had sitting in my garage. It had Windows Server 2012 on it. I played around turning it into a NAS. Found this HDD rack and wanted to RAID 5 over 8 drives. I cut out the OEM HDD two bay that was there, trimmed the metal on the bottom of the SAN's 5 bay rack and slid right in. I removed the fan from the HDD rack as it wouldn't fit. I also think that the included power/fan controller is MEH at best. Am adding a 8 port PCIe sata card and power supply. I am playing with all of the drives I could find. (BTW a 2005 250gig WD Black drive with 60,000 hours still works- with no errors on drive.) As for construction- the metal cage part is great. The clips are good- IF you handle them like glass. The clips that hold the drives in pulls out to the side about 1//8 of an inch BUT getting them to pull out for the first time was a tight fit and required nervous pulling. Other than the clips and junk fan controller, this Rack is good enough for me and cheaper that having to find a new case for the drives. Recommended- could be made a little better, but not by much.
