Xiaomi and Huawei Make Top Five List of Global Wearable Device Sellers Dominated by Apple

Ding Yi / Mar 17, 2021 05:00 PM / Business & Tech

Two Chinese companies placed in the top five of wearable device sellers globally in the fourth quarter of 2020, collectively controlling 15.5% of a global market dominated by Apple, according to market research firm IDC.

In the three months through December, Xiaomi maintained its position as the world’s second-largest wearable device vendor as it saw its shipments grow 5% year-on-year to 13.5 million units during the period, giving it a global market share of 8.8%.

Xiaomi’s quarterly performance largely stemmed from a growing demand for its hearable devices in China and other parts of the Asia Pacific region despite a drop in its Mi Band sales, IDC said.

However, there are signs of Samsung catching up with Xiaomi. In the fourth quarter last year, the South Korean giant ranked third with a global market share of 8.5%, compared with the same period of 2019, when Xiaomi and Samsung held respective global market shares of 10.6% and 9%.

The fourth spot was claimed by Huawei, whose global market share dropped to 6.7% in the fourth quarter of 2020 from 7.9% in the same period of 2019, as the Chinese tech giant’s supply chains are crippled by the U.S. sanctions.

Huawei was followed by India’s BoAt, which enjoyed the highest year-on-year shipment growth of 470% among the top five in the fourth quarter, giving it a global market share of 3.5%.

Apple was still the global market leader with a share of 36.2%, flat from the fourth quarter of 2019.

Overall, the worldwide shipments of wearable devices reached 153.5 million units in the fourth quarter of 2020, representing a year-over-year increase of 27.2%.
