MIDLAND, Mich. – The No. 4 Grand Valley State Lakers dominated in a 5-0 win over the Northwood Timberwolves Sunday (Sept. 29) afternoon in a road win against a GLIAC opponent in a non-conference match. The Lakers improve to 6-1 on the season and have won three straight matches. Five different Lakers scored in the win.
It did not take long for the Lakers to jump in front.
Chantel Carranza took a feed from
Ava Cook and finished for her fourth goal of the season in the 10' for what would prove to be the game winner. Just two minutes later, Cook would return to goal-scoring form as she finished off a corner kick to double the advantage.
"I was really proud of the effort by our team today," said head coach
Jeff Hosler. "We always talk about starting and finishing halves strong, and we did that extremely well today; particularly in the first half. After a pair of difficult games with Northwood last year, I was happy we could get a convincing result on the road."
The Lakers would bunch three goals in the final five minutes of the first half to put the match away.
Riko Sagara scored off a free kick just outside the penalty area in the 41' then
Olivia Trombley scored her first goal of the year off a corner in the 42' before
Chelsea Graves provided the dagger in the 44' to round out the scoring.
The Lakers kept the pressure on in the second half, but couldn't add to their scoring total as they held the Timberwolves without a shot for the day. The Lakers would take 24 shots, including 15 on goal, in the win. The Lakers are back in action next Sunday (Oct. 6) as they host the Davenport Panthers at 1 PM in the final match before GLIAC play begins.
