“And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising” (Isaiah 60:3 KJV).

What can today’s Scripture teach us about spiritual calligraphy?

Read Titus chapter 2: “[1] But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine: [2] That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience. [3] The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; [4] That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, [5] To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.

“[6] Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded. [7] In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, [8] Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you. [9] Exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things; not answering again; [10] Not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things.

“[11] For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, [12] Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; [13] Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; [14] Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. [15] These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.”

Paul wrote how members of the Body of Christ (especially young women) should carefully guard how they live, lest unbelievers “blaspheme [speak against] the word of God” (verse 5). Similarly, servants (employees) should “adorn [decorate, make attractive/appealing] the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things” (verse 10). Such precautions prevent hypocrisy (thereby avoiding ancient Israel’s sins of Romans 2:21-24).

Let us summarize and conclude this devotionals arc….

“And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising” (Isaiah 60:3 KJV).

What can today’s Scripture teach us about spiritual calligraphy?

It is no secret the Corinthians were the worldliest, most carnal (fleshly) believers in the entire canon of Scripture. They thought and acted like people who were lost and on their merry way to Hell! What makes it all the more ridiculous is that Paul had spent some two years teaching them the Gospel of Grace and grace living (see Acts 18:11,18)! One of their primary sins was abusing spiritual gifts—especially speaking in tongues. Three chapters of 1 Corinthians are therefore devoted to spiritual gifts (read chapters 12–14).

Consider 1 Corinthians 14:21-23: “In the law it is written [Isaiah 28:11,12], With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord. Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe. If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad [crazy, insane, lunatic]?”

The Corinthian assembly of Christians met in a building that shared a wall with the Jewish synagogue of Corinth. Read Acts 18:1-8, noting that “joined hard” in verse 7 references the common wall between them. Since the Corinthian saints were abusing the spiritual gift of tongues by engaging in gibberish or ecstatic utterances (just like the pagans in their worship services!), that spiritual gift was not serving its purpose of reaching unsaved Jews next-door as the Spirit of God had intended! It was the spirit of man trying to counterfeit God’s work, and even lost Jews could see the silliness! Instead of attracting unsaved Israel to Paul’s ministry and message, such frivolity was repelling them, keeping them antagonistic toward the Lord Jesus Christ whom those spiritual gifts should have glorified.

Exalting human “wisdom,” Corinth abounded with spiritual cacography, ugly handwriting, hideous words and deeds….

“And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising” (Isaiah 60:3 KJV).

What can today’s Scripture teach us about spiritual calligraphy?

Read Deuteronomy 4:5-8, Moses’ speech to Israel: “Behold, I have taught you statutes and judgments, even as the LORD my God commanded me, that ye should do so in the land whither ye go to possess it. Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the nations, which shall hear all these statutes, and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people. For what nation is there so great, who hath God so nigh unto them, as the LORD our God is in all things that we call upon him for? And what nation is there so great, that hath statutes and judgments so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day?”

God intended Israel to display His wisdom for all the Gentiles to see and admire. This was especially important since we will remember these Gentiles or nations were walking in the foolishness of satanic darkness and spiritual ignorance (Genesis 11:1-9; Acts 14:15-17; Acts 17:16-31; Acts 26:17,18; Romans 1:20-32; Ephesians 2:1-3,11,12; Ephesians 4:17-19). The nation Israel, however, did not value and esteem their Hebrew Bible (our Old Testament): they joined the Gentiles in their darkness!

Notice how, some 600 years before Christ, the LORD God spoke these words through Jeremiah the Prophet: “For my people is foolish, they have not known me; they are sottish [stupid!] children, and they have none understanding: they are wise to do evil, but to do good they have no knowledge” (Jeremiah 4:22). Also consider Jeremiah 5:21,23: “Hear now this, O foolish [same Hebrew word translated ‘sottish’] people, and without understanding; which have eyes, and see not; which have ears, and hear not:…. But this people hath a revolting and a rebellious heart; they are revolted and gone.”

While true of the ancient nation Israel, the Holy Spirit could also compose these Jeremiah verses to and about the professing church and even the genuine church. Spiritual folly and stupidity reign supreme in the majority of our “Christian” schools, local “Christian” assemblies, and “Christian” homes….

“And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising” (Isaiah 60:3 KJV).

What can today’s Scripture teach us about spiritual calligraphy?

Here is God’s grace expressed in and through members of the Church the Body of Christ: “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure. Do all things without murmurings and disputings: That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world; Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain” (Philippians 2:13-16).

“Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid [May God never let that happen!]” (Romans 6:11-15).

“If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory” (Colossians 3:1-4). “This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness” (Ephesians 4:17-19).

Here is spiritual calligraphy, beautiful writing we can apply to the details of our life….

“And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising” (Isaiah 60:3 KJV).

What can today’s Scripture teach us about spiritual calligraphy?

Although the prophetic program anticipated the salvation of Gentiles or the nations through Israel’s rise to kingdom glory (today’s Scripture), God was withholding a secret that He did not reveal until the Apostle Paul’s ministry (beginning in Acts chapter 9).

Read Romans chapter 11: “[11] I say then, Have they [Israel] stumbled that they should fall? God forbid: but rather through their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, for to provoke them to jealousy. [12] Now if the fall of them be the riches of the world, and the diminishing of them the riches of the Gentiles; how much more their fulness? [13] For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I magnify mine office: [14] If by any means I may provoke to emulation them which are my flesh, and might save some of them. [15] For if the casting away of them be the reconciling of the world, what shall the receiving of them be, but life from the dead?”

Whereas Israel in prophecy was to be a light to the unbelieving Gentiles, now Gentiles in mystery are to be a light to unbelieving Israel. This was especially true during the Acts transitional period, when Paul’s Gentile converts were advised not to use their liberty under grace in ways that would offend unbelieving Israel. Acts chapter 15: “[19] Wherefore my sentence is, that we trouble not them, which from among the Gentiles are turned to God: [20] But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood. [21] For Moses of old time hath in every city them that preach him, being read in the synagogues every sabbath day…. [28] For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things; [29] That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well.”

Alas, as with unbelieving Israel in time past, so Gentiles in the but now engaged in spiritual cacography….

Mother: A Virtuous Woman

Sunday, May 12, 2024

“Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies” (Proverbs 31:10 KJV).

Today is Mother’s Day, so we dedicate this devotional to godly women (specifically mothers). I especially dedicate this to the virtuous woman who has been in my life for almost 36 years… my mom!

Today’s Scripture is the first verse of the Bible’s “Virtuous Woman” passage (Proverbs 31:10-31). King Solomon explained that the virtuous woman:

  • has a husband who safely trusts in her (verses 11,12).
  • is not lazy, but is strong because she works to feed and clothe her family and herself (verses 13-19,21,22,24,25,27).
  • pities the poor and needy (verse 20).
  • has a husband who is well-known because of her godly lifestyle (verse 23).
  • opens her mouth with wisdom, and speaks kindly and lovingly (verse 26).
  • has children and a husband who praise her (verse 28).
  • excels in what she does (verse 29).
  • has works that praise her (verse 31).

Verse 30 explains the virtuous woman is “a woman that feareth the LORD.”

The Apostle Paul wrote that godly women should: not slander/gossip, not be controlled by alcohol and emotions (sober minded), be teachers of good things, love their husbands and children, be cautious and modest, maintain the home, be “good,” and should obey (respect) their husbands… “that the word of God be not blasphemed” (Titus 2:3-5). A Christian woman, especially a mother, should be a virtuous woman in beliefs as well as in deed. She needs to set an example for her children (especially her daughters).

A Christian woman and/or Christian mother places her faith in this sound Bible doctrine, the indwelling Holy Spirit will then take that doctrine and transform her for God’s glory (1 Thessalonians 2:13). Her mind will be renewed by sound Bible doctrine, and that will transform her outward activity (Romans 12:1,2).

Are you a Christian woman or Christian mother who desires to be the woman God intends you to be in Christ Jesus? Place your faith in this sound Bible doctrine, and God will take care of the rest!

“And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising” (Isaiah 60:3 KJV).

What can today’s Scripture teach us about spiritual calligraphy?

Though Israel in time past enjoyed many Divine blessings (Romans 9:4,5; cf. Romans 2:17-20 below), the nation as a whole did not take seriously God’s purpose and program for them.

Observe Romans 2:17-24: “[17] Behold, thou art called a Jew, and restest in the law, and makest thy boast of God, [18] And knowest his will, and approvest the things that are more excellent, being instructed out of the law; [19] And art confident that thou thyself art a guide of the blind, a light of them which are in darkness, [20] An instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes, which hast the form of knowledge and of the truth in the law. [21] Thou therefore which teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? thou that preachest a man should not steal, dost thou steal? [22] Thou that sayest a man should not commit adultery, dost thou commit adultery? thou that abhorrest idols, dost thou commit sacrilege [steal idols from temples]? [23] Thou that makest thy boast of the law, through breaking the law dishonourest thou God? [24] For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you, as it is written.”

Verses 21-24 show how the Jewish people were hypocrites. They bragged to the nations about their (Israeli) status of being God’s people, and how they had the Hebrew Bible… yet they were unwilling to see their own sinful nature as taught in their Hebrew Bible. Israel’s boast was, “We are better than the Gentiles!” Instead of spiritual calligraphy (God’s beautiful words believed by Israel and thus working in Israel to teach the Gentiles), it was spiritual cacography (Greek, “kakos,” as in “evil/sick/diseased;” “grapho,” or “I write”). God’s Hebrew Bible and His Jewish nation entrusted with it were ugly or repulsive to the Gentiles. Verse 24 reveals how Israel in time past repeatedly afforded Gentiles the opportunity to “blaspheme” (speak against) the LORD God. Sadly, watching the Jewish people live in sin, the nations replied: “If that is what it means to be a worshipper of JEHOVAH God, we would rather die in our pagan religions!”

“And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising” (Isaiah 60:3 KJV).

What can today’s Scripture teach us about spiritual calligraphy?

God’s purpose in giving Israel covenants was to bless Gentiles too, as the Apostle Paul argued when citing several Old Testament verses in Romans 15:8-12: “Now I say that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers: And that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy; as it is written [Psalm 18:49], For this cause I will confess to thee among the Gentiles, and sing unto thy name. And again he saith [Deuteronomy 32:43], Rejoice, ye Gentiles, with his people. And again [Psalm 117:1], Praise the Lord, all ye Gentiles; and laud him, all ye people. And again, Esaias saith [Isaiah 11:10], There shall be a root of Jesse, and he that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles; in him shall the Gentiles trust.”

The Holy Spirit, through the Apostle Peter, reminded Israel of the covenant God made with their forefathers: “Yea, and all the prophets from Samuel and those that follow after, as many as have spoken, have likewise foretold of these days. Ye are the children of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed. Unto you first God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities” (Acts 3:24-26).

As per this “the gospel of the circumcision” (Galatians 2:7—Peter’s Gospel), Israel was to believe the Gospel of the Kingdom (Jesus is Christ/Messiah). In Christ’s kingdom, they would teach the Gentiles (today’s Scripture). Alas, the Jewish people overwhelmingly refused to receive Jesus as Christ, whether during Matthew to John or early Acts. God could not reach the Gentiles because His chief nation, Israel, was unbelieving, thus failing to become His earthly people whom He could utilize.

Moreover, Israel had become utterly disgusting in the eyes of the Gentiles. In spite of God’s plan, the nations saw the Jewish people as a hypocritical group no better than the rest of the world….

“And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising” (Isaiah 60:3 KJV).

What can today’s Scripture teach us about spiritual calligraphy?

Read Isaiah 60:1-3 (today’s Scripture in context), God’s words to Israel: “Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee. For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the LORD shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee. And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising.” Also, Isaiah 61:6: “But ye [Israel] shall be named the Priests of the LORD: men shall call you the Ministers of our God: ye shall eat the riches of the Gentiles, and in their glory shall ye boast yourselves.”

Zechariah parallels this: “Thus saith the LORD of hosts; It shall yet come to pass, that there shall come people, and the inhabitants of many cities: And the inhabitants of one city shall go to another, saying, Let us go speedily to pray before the LORD, and to seek the LORD of hosts: I will go also. Yea, many people and strong nations shall come to seek the LORD of hosts in Jerusalem, and to pray before the LORD. Thus saith the LORD of hosts; In those days it shall come to pass, that ten men shall take hold out of all languages of the nations, even shall take hold of the skirt of him that is a Jew, saying, We will go with you: for we have heard that God is with you” (Zechariah 8:20-23).

These are the Gentiles of the kingdom commission of Matthew chapter 28: “[18] And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. [19] Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: [20] Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”

Although God handed the nations (Gentiles) over to Satan worship in Genesis 11:1-9 (cf. Romans 1:18-32), He did not forget about them….

“And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising” (Isaiah 60:3 KJV).

What can today’s Scripture teach us about spiritual calligraphy?

Shortly after the Great Flood, the nations gathered around the Tower of Babel in heathen/pagan-idol worship. Genesis chapter 11 continues: “[5] And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded. [6] And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. [7] Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech. [8] So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city. [9] Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.”

With Abraham’s justification (salvation) and call in Genesis chapter 12, a drastic change in the LORD God’s dealings with mankind transpires: “[1] Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee: [2] And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: [3] And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.”

By isolating Abraham from the rest of the world’s people, the LORD God was in no way uncaring toward them. JEHOVAH God had the nations, the “families of the earth,” in mind here with this Abrahamic Covenant (note verse 3). Abraham would be the progenitor of one nation, then God would give His words to (and bless) that one nation, and finally that one nation would be His channel of salvation and blessing to the world’s nations (Gentiles). This nation of Abraham is Israel, the Jewish people….
