WISE Unlockdown Edition - August 2020

Welcome to WISE 2020!

Given current restrictions on travel and gatherings, WISE will hold a second WISE Unlockdown Edition online from Monday 3 to Friday 7 August.

There will be no further (online or on-site) WISE workshops in 2020.

Just like at any WISE workshop, participants will benefit from:

- The same quality feedback from native professionals
- A detailed timetable which guarantees practice from your C languages to your A and practice into a retour
- The same hardworking atmosphere
- As always, plenty of chances to get to know your colleagues at relaxed, informal social sessions
- The EYAWKANDA Multilingual Debate on the State of the Profession

Since remote interpretation is more exhausting, there will be 3 practice sessions per day (1 hour 30 mins each, including feedback), from Monday to Friday (11.30am to 5.15pm each day, with breaks and 1 hour for lunch).

*********** APPLICATION DEADLINE: Wednesday 15 July *************

WISE is a practice workshop for professional interpreters who may want to add to their already extensive booth experience by working on their professional skills. In previous years, the booths catered for were Spanish, English, French, German and Italian (as well as Dutch at WISE Brussels), with a similar language regime planned for the August 2020 online workshop.

Working on a retour is also a key part of WISE, with feedback provided by native colleagues.

Due to high demand in past editions, places will be offered to participants following a selection process.

Please fill out the form below to apply. The application period will close on Wednesday 15 July and applicants will be informed on the selection process by 19 July.

Giving speeches, feedback and interpretation online

Zoom will be the online platform used, with special arrangements being made to allow for speeches, interpretation and feedback to be given in an effective and convenient way. This will mean that participants will have to respect certain technological requirements and comply with slightly more complex methods than the average online call, using two online devices at the same time, for example.

Participants must have the following to ensure a suitable working environment for all:

- An Ethernet cable
- 2 devices that can connect to Zoom at the same time (one of them being a PC or laptop with Ethernet connection)
- 2 Zoom accounts
- 2 sets of earphones/headphones
- 1 plug-in microphone

Once all participants have been selected, all invited interpreters will take part in a brief group test on Sunday 26 July (8pm) where we will ensure that everyone's sound quality is optimal for simultaneous interpretation.

If your sound is not optimal, we'll invite you to obtain any additional equipment that might be necessary (eg, a USB headset or an Ethernet cable) and we'll have a second test.

What is WISE?

· The Idea Behind WISE

WISE is about professional interpreters helping each other improve their skills. The workshop is run on a mutually beneficial basis, relying on the goodwill of all participants. This means that as a participant, you will interpret the speeches of other professional colleagues while also receiving feedback from them. In return, you will give constructive feedback and helpful advice to other experienced interpreters, as well as speeches in your native language. WISE can be a great opportunity to work on your retour, receiving feedback from natives.

· Structure of the workshops

The WISE timetable is tailored to the combinations of participants, meaning that practice time will vary in accordance with the number of B and C languages each participant has. Nevertheless, the aim is for all participants to benefit from similar practice periods each. The interpretation mode of the workshop will be simultaneous. Consecutive will only be organised if participants make a special request and there are enough colleagues available to practice consec.

A detailed tailor-made timetable for the week holds everything together, with 3 sessions of 1 hour 30 mins (including feedback) per day. Sessions will run from 11.30am until 5.15pm with breaks throughout, Monday to Friday.

Social sessions, ice-breakers and special editions of EYAWKANDA will allow participants the chance to wind down after the sessions and to get to know their colleagues.

Each participant will have to prepare speeches in their mother tongue; 3 speeches for simultaneous lasting 15 minutes each.

· Price of workshop

Given that feedback and speeches will be given on a mutually beneficial basis among professional colleagues, there will be no paid speechgivers or teachers. Nevertheless, in order to cover the organisation and coordination of the event, there will be a fee of 150 EUR per participant.

Participants are required to pay a part of this fee (75 EUR) by bank transfer to secure their place. The remainder of the fee will then be payable before the workshop.

IMPORTANT NOTICE - CANCELLATIONS

Cancellations are a major disruption in the WISE timetable and in the workshops.

After fees are paid, cancellations will not be reimbursable given the planning time that goes into ensuring that each participant has the right number of practice hours for the right languages.

Since WISE operates on a mutually beneficial basis, you would need to be fully available from Monday to Friday (11.30 to 5.15pm), as you might be needed as a speaker or as a listener when you are not assigned as an interpreter.
